Inside the story

Dr Henrietta Modi, an American doctor working in the emergency room at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital in Dublin, witnesses the 1916 Rising. Against a backdrop of political division and a nation’s struggle for independence, her own life takes an unexpected turn.

Romance blossoms when Henrietta meets Dr James Hogarth, an Irish Volunteer. As she becomes involved in the fight for Irish independence, she finds an unlikely ally in George Bernard Shaw.

Through Henrietta’s story, Tilly explores the people, ideals and difficult choices behind the foundation of the Irish state.
